Upper Saranac Foundations crowd funding campaign to remove harmful aquatic invasive species (AIS) at Fish Creek Ponds

PLEASE SHARE WITH ALL WHO ENJOY THE WATERS OF THE SARANAC LAKE WATERSHED.

Milfoil is degrading Fish Creek Ponds Public Campgrounds water quality, its recreational value, and has the potential to do the same to Upper Saranac Lake.  The ability to enjoy clean, weed-free, water- based recreation is being threatened.

For this reason, the Upper Saranac Foundation (USF) is looking to expand its successful AIS hand-harvesting program to Fish Creek Ponds, BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP.  The USF along with the Adirondack Foundation has created a crowd funding campaign with the intent of targeting a large number of people to support this effort. This is only a small part of the funding effort, but is important to get the word out to a large number of donors who can make small contributions.

Please consider making a donation of any size ($5, $10, $20 or any amount). Also, please share our funding campaign with all that you know who enjoy the waters of the Saranac Lake Watershed.   For more information and to donate, go to https://adirondackgives.org/campaigns/help-us-remove-harmful-aquatic-invasive-species-ais-at-fish-creek-ponds/#description.

This campaign is just getting started, but only lasts through August, so acting quickly is important. Harvesting AIS at Fish Creek Ponds will begin in early fall.

Please pass this along to anyone you know who enjoys spending time on our waters.
Thanks in advance for your consideration and support.

Hello. My name is Guy Middleton. In addition to my role as Lake Manager for Upper Saranac Lake, I am a Regional Director for Adirondack Lakes Alliance (ALA); a newly formed group of lake associations, town supervisors and shore owners from within the Adirondack Park. The group’s purpose is to share information and resources, and to have a voice representing the similar issues surrounding our Adirondack Lakes. The ALA’s primary mission is to protect and preserve our Adirondack waters.

Lake associations and towns are being significantly challenged by water quality issues, invasive species, shoreline degradation, habitat destruction, ecological threats, and the economic impact that they pose for all of us. ALA seeks to provide opportunities for those who share this common concern to participate in discussions that explore approaches to responding to these issues.

I am writing you in hopes that if your lake association is not currently a member of ALA, you will join us in this Adirondack Park effort.  In just a few months, nearly sixty (60) lake associations have signed on to our membership roster.  In addition we have created partnerships with Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program, Paul Smith’s College, local government and several other agencies who serve on our advisory board.

We recently concluded our first inaugural Summer Conference with an impressive list of attendees representing lakes associations, town government officials, government agencies, non for profits groups, and educational representatives. The conference was a great opportunity for Lake Associations to network and gather information that will benefit their own lake.

The ALA can represent the major stakeholders, property owners and recreational users of our waters. Lake associations throughout the Adirondack Park have not been represented collectively and ALA can make an important contribution in this effort. The ALA seeks to become an active partner with lake organizations, such as yours.

ALA is looking forward to future discussions involving the protection and preservation of our waters. Please let me know your interest in being part of ALA, or with any questions you may have about ALA. In addition please feel free to pass along our information to anyone that may be of interest in protecting our lakes.
