Hello everyone,
In December, 2015 DEC announced that $2 million dollars would be available to fund programs to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species throughout the state. These grants will be funded for three years(75% state funding & 25%local match). The application deadline was set for January 29, 2016. I am pleased to announce that the Town of Arietta (TOA) has applied for $258,000 in total funding.
The TOA has directly applied for 3 boat stewards for 3 years contracted with Paul Smith's College. The total budget for this grant is $139,500(100,000 state funding & $39,500 TOA funding). One boat steward would be assigned to work at each of the the 3 DEC campgrounds on Piseco Lake.
The TOA was not eligible to apply for a boat decontamination program since TOA did not have a preexisting boat steward program. The Town of Lake Pleasant agreed to apply for a decontamination station located at the Piseco School. The TOA will transfer funds to the Town of Lake Pleasant for the local match. The total budget for the decontamination station is $119,000($89,250 state funds & $29,750 TOA funds) for 3 years. The application if approved would provide $26,000 for a LANDA ECOCS self contained decontamination unit and 2 boat stewards contracted with Paul Smith's College.
The Town of Lake Pleasant has applied for a boat decontamination station on Route 30 with 2 boat stewards, and 2 additional stewards to be located at Moffitts Beach. The Town of Caroga Lake has applied for 2 boat stewards to staff a boat decontamination station near Nick Stoner's Golf Course. The Town of Indian Lake has applied for 1 boat steward to be assigned to the Indian Point DEC campgrounds.
Many organizations contributed to the development of these grant applications for our area. Hamilton County, Hamilton County Soil & Water District, the Adirondack Lakes Alliance, Paul Smith's College, the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program, the Towns of Arietta, Lake Pleasant, Caroga Lake, and Indian Lake, as well as the Piseco, Lake Pleasant/ Sacandaga, West Canada, and Indian Lake Associations all participated in the planning, development, and submission of these grant applications.
DEC expects to announce the grant award in April. We should all keep our fingers crossed!
