Adirondack Lakes Alliance Executive Committee:

Picture
Scott Ireland
Executive Director

[email protected]

Scott and his wife moved permanently to the Adirondacks in 2019 and he became involved with the Schroon Lake Association shortly after, becoming President in 2021. In 2022, he became the Executive Director of ALA, and has been working to ensure a wider audience for the organization.
Scott has degrees in Biology and Chemistry from the University of South Florida, and has spent his career in scientific instrument sales. He has worked for the last sixteen years with Bruker, in their Preclinical Imaging Division.
Scott hiked 16/46 High Peaks before his knees were shot, and now prefers paddling the park's many lakes and rivers, along with trying to learn to fly fish.

My family and I have been vacationing in the Adirondacks for over 40 years. Ten years ago, we were fortunate to purchase the camp at Raquette Lake, where our family has enjoyed countless vacations. Since then, we have become full-time seasonal residents. I am now retired, but for most of my career, I served as the Chief of Water Quality Operations for the Rochester Water Bureau, dedicating significant time to studying Hemlock Lake and Canadice Lake in New York's Finger Lakes region. Through this work, I learned that lakes are dynamic environments, and my passion for them inspired me to become more involved with the Adirondack Lakes Alliance.

My interest in the environment and the outdoors has been constant throughout my life. I was a teacher of Biology and Chemistry at West Islip H.S. on Long Island for 34 years. My husband and I built a home in Lake Luzerne in 1993 and moved in permanently when we both retired in 2007. Our home is in the Northwoods Association where I have been president and CSLAP volunteer for over 20 years. During that time, I learned a great deal about lake and forest management and the wonderful resources available in the Adirondack Park. The issues are many and the fixes are often difficult. I welcome the opportunity to help the lakes and watersheds in Region C protect and preserve our waters by sharing resources and knowledge.

Mary McLean Johnson
Founder and Vice-President, Chateaugay Lake Foundation

[email protected]

Mary Johnson grew up in the North Country, where summers spent on Lake Ozonia inspired a life-long love for Adirondack waters. After leaving the region for study and work, a mid-career job change drew her back to the region where she met her husband Jim. In 2003, they found their dream home on Upper Chateaugay Lake, where they spend the summer and fall. It was the following summer when Mary learned about Eurasian watermilfoil and noticed it washing up on the shoreline. Parts of the Chateaugay Narrows were becoming clogged by the invasive plant. In 2007, she joined with other concerned shore owners to form the Chateaugay Lake Foundation, with a focus on controlling the fast-spreading infestation. As founder and President, Mary has led the CLF’s fundraising and milfoil management efforts for 18 years, recently swapping roles with CLF’s Vice President David Kemp. With this experience and a background in economic and community development, she looks forward to helping the ALA and its members meet the challenges facing Adirondack waterbodies.

Michele Curry
Blue Mountain Lake

[email protected]

Michele’s love of the Adirondacks stems from a childhood of summers spent on Blue Mountain Lake. In 2020, she and her husband, Eugene, returned to live there full time. That same year variable leaf milfoil (VLM) was discovered in Utowana Lake. Recognizing the threat not only to Utowana, but also to Eagle and Blue Mountain Lakes (all part of the Eckford Chain), Michele soon found herself immersed in the work of the Blue Mountain Lake Association’s Water Watch Committee, which she now Chairs. After a career working as a communications specialist for colleges and environmental groups, she hopes to use her public relation skills to help build support for the ALA.

Courtney Johnson-Woods
Cranberry Lake

[email protected]

Courtney Johnson-Woods is joining the Adirondack Lakes Alliance as interim regional director for Region E covering Herkimer, Oneida, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties. She is currently the manager of business development and partnerships for the NYS Center of Excellence in Healthy Water Solutions, co-led by Clarkson University and SUNY ESF. She has maintained what is now known as a “fractional career” straddling academia as a former Clarkson professor and as a consultant representing trade organizations and international development projects focused on sustainability initiatives. Her PhD and MS from SUNY ESF focus on citizen engagement, communications, and local decision-making around environmental and natural resource challenges, and she is a trained facilitator in change management and creative problem solving. Courtney grew up in CNY recreating on Raquette and Fourth Lakes, and she recently purchased property on Cranberry Lake in St. Lawrence County with her husband where he grew up and where they also have a hunting camp on the Oswegatchie with their three grown sons. Personally and professionally, Courtney looks forward to working with our board and organization, as well as the associations, communities, and affiliate organizations across Region E.
