2025 ALA Symposium was a Great Success!

Over 90 representatives from across the Adirondack Park's lake associations and ALA partners attended the 2025 Symposium on June 27th at the Paul Smith's VIC. The morning started with presentations by Assemblymen Matt Simpson and Billy Jones, who expressed their continued support for our mission. They further discussed an important piece of legislation that stalled in the last session - the establishment of the Road Salt Reduction Council (Assembly Bill A4481A), whose function will be to implement the Road Salt Task Force's recommendations. An open discussion was held to determine how the ALA and our member associations can help move this important piece of legislation forward.

Following the Assemblymen was Kevin Chlad, of the Adirondack Council, who also discussed a piece of stalled legislation - A2627 - for the establishment of funding for NY lake associations. In this case, the stalled bit was fortunate, as the bill needs to be more encompassing than in it's current form, and ALA will be working with the Council to help rewrite and advance this.

Dr. Pete Mcintyre, of Cornell University and the ADK Fishery Research Program, presented detailed data on the impact of global warming on our lakes and rivers, and shared an example of how invasive control can be circumvented. Despite 25 years of work to eradicate the invasive smallmouth bass from a study lake, the fish actually evolved and had clearly defined chromosomal changes to better adapt to the efforts to eradicate them. In the end, the brown trout recovered as the bass mutated to an even smaller species.

Bob Hauserman, President of Paradox Lake Association, shared their organization's multi-year history of battling Eurasian milfoil, culminating in last year's application of ProcellaCOR in two highly impacted areas. Bob illustrated the importance of collecting and tracking as much data as possible to show the growth and mitigation of the invasive, which showed the transition of the growth from a linear rate to an exponential rate, requiring a new method of control.

Brett Wimsatt, of Adirondack Watershed Institute, gave an update on the lake steward and boat wash stations. Brian Greene, Executive Director of APIPP, introduced their new Aquatic Invasive Coordinator, Anna Hardiman, and the two presented on the latest updates on invasive management in the Park, and David Miller, from the Adirondack Council, showed the connection between septic systems, lake warming and the increase in Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs).

The day ended with a social hour and a chance to network and browse through our Resource Fair participants.

Planning has begun for next year's Symposium and venue - if you have suggestions for either please reach out to me using the button below.
